Introduction

Lake Turkana is the largest lake in northern Kenya and the largest desert lake in the world (also known as the Jade Sea). The surrounding area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 (Lake Turkana National Parks, including Sibiloi, Central Island and South Island). The region is famous for its vast desert lake scenery, huge Nile crocodile populations and treasure trove of human-anthropology (such as the Koobi Fora fossil beds), and is often called the cradle of humankind.
