Introduction

The National Museum of Libya, also known as the Red Castle Museum (As-Saraya Al-Hamra), occupies the red fortress overlooking the port in the centre of Tripoli, the capital. It is Libya's most comprehensive museum, with about 47 halls covering Neolithic rock art, Phoenician, ancient Roman (sculpture and mosaics), Byzantine, Islamic art and Libyan ethnography.
