Introduction

The Bandiagara Escarpment is the core landscape of the Dogon Country, located in the Mopti Region of central Mali. It is a stretch of sandstone cliff running roughly 150 km along the plateau, reaching heights of about 400 m (some sources say 500 m), and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1989. Since the 15th century, the Dogon people have built terraced mud-brick villages, granaries, altars and communal assembly houses (Togu Na) on the cliffs, in caves and on the cliff tops, keeping alive ancient traditions of masks, rituals and ancestor worship. It is one of Africa's most compelling geological and cultural landscapes.
