Introduction

Quartier Habous (the Habous quarter) in the centre of Casablanca is a new town laid out in a traditional Moroccan style during the French colonial period (1930s) to house Jewish merchants and local artisans. Its streets are orderly and its alleys tidy, more tranquil than the old medina, lined with craft shops and souks as well as the famous pastry shop Pâtisserie Bennis Habous, and it is home to the former Sacred Heart Cathedral - designed by French architect Paul Tournon in a neo-Gothic and Art Deco style, now used as a cultural exhibition centre.
