Introduction

El Badi Palace in the Kasbah quarter of Marrakech is a vast 16th-century palace built by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur of the Saadian dynasty, once celebrated for its lavishness and enormous scale. Later stripped of its building materials by the Alaouite dynasty, it now stands in ruin; today visitors can wander the wide courtyard, four surviving pavilions, underground passages and ramparts, admire the exquisite Koutoubia Mosque minbar (pulpit) kept in the basement, and climb the walls for views over the medina and the Atlas Mountains.
