Introduction
The Zaouia de Moulay Idriss is one of Fes's holiest Islamic sites, housing the tomb of Moulay Idriss I (c. 745-791) who founded Fes in 789 and introduced Islam to Morocco. Non-Muslims cannot enter but can admire the exterior. Idriss I was the ancestor of Morocco's Alaouite and Idrisid dynasties — he came from Arabia, established Morocco's first Islamic dynasty and founded Fes. The complex has a distinctive green-tiled dome — one of the Medina's most visible landmarks. Exterior walls feature zellige tiles and stucco.
