Introduction

Le Gouffre lies near Etang-Sale-les-Bains on the south-west coast of Reunion, a narrow sea-cut chasm carved from black basalt lava. The chasm runs inland from the shore, and when the southern swell arrives the sea surges in and is hurled upwards, throwing up spray several metres high in a spectacular scene. There are viewing paths and a coastal recreation area, good for a short stop to watch the waves, but the swell is fierce and the rocks are slippery, so always keep a safe distance, never approach the edge of the opening and heed on-site safety warnings.
