Cango Caves

Introduction

The Cango Caves are the largest and most spectacular limestone cave system in South Africa, located in the Swartberg Mountains near Oudtshoorn. Formed over tens of millions of years, the caves feature diverse stalactites, stalagmites and stone columns, with the largest chamber reaching dozens of metres high and capable of holding thousands of people. The caves maintain a constant temperature year-round and are divided into several distinct chambers, with Cleve Hall and the Concert Hall being the most famous. Guides explain the geological formation and the history of discovery by local indigenous people, and light shows transform the stalactites into a dreamlike spectacle. This is a must-visit landmark in Oudtshoorn.
