Dougga

Introduction

Dougga, known as Thugga in ancient times, is the best-preserved Roman site in Tunisia, often called the Pompeii of North Africa. This ancient city is situated on a hill at 600 meters elevation, overlooking the fertile Medjerda Valley with an exceptional geographical setting. The site preserves rich Roman architecture including temples, theater, baths, markets, and residential buildings, with the Temple of Liber and Capitol particularly well preserved. The ancient city also integrates Numidian, Punic, Roman, and Byzantine cultural elements, offering an excellent window into the fusion of ancient North African civilizations.
