Introduction

Petrified Forest National Park is one of America's most unique geological parks. In northeastern Arizona, it features stunning petrified wood (~225-million-year-old Triassic trees replaced by colorful agate and quartz) and the Painted Desert (colorful mudstone and sandstone layers) — a unique geological wonder. Triassic conifers buried in volcanic ash, replaced by silica into agate, amethyst and quartz — cross-sections show rainbow colors. The Painted Desert features red, orange, gray and purple mudstone layers. Ancient petroglyphs and Puerco Pueblo archaeological site are also featured. Park runs along I-40. Visiting to experience 225-million-year-old petrified forests is a unique Arizona geological experience.
