Introduction

Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is New Zealand's most magnificent alpine national park. Centered on NZ's highest peak (Aoraki/Mount Cook, 3,724 m), it features majestic snowy peaks, the Tasman Glacier (NZ's longest at ~27 km), emerald alpine lakes and rich alpine trails — the South Island's most stunning alpine destination. Aoraki (3,724 m) — "the cloud piercer" in Maori. Surrounded by glaciers — Tasman Glacier (~27 km, ~2 km wide) is NZ's longest and one of the world's longest temperate glaciers. Hooker Valley Track (~10 km return, flat) crosses three swing bridges to a glacial lake with views of Cook's ice wall. Free admission. Mt Cook Village is the only accommodation. Visiting for NZ's highest peak's glaciers and snowy peaks is an awe-inspiring NZ experience.
