Introduction

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's largest, most intact volcanic calderas and one of Africa's most important wildlife reserves. About 2.5 million years old (~20 km diameter, ~260 km²), it features stunning crater scenery, Africa's densest wildlife (Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) and important early human sites (Olduvai Gorge, "Cradle of Mankind") — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater floor has grasslands, marshes and lakes — about 25,000 large animals including lions, black rhinos (easiest place to spot), elephants, zebras, wildebeest and flamingos. Crater rim at ~2,200 m. Olduvai Gorge has ~1.8-million-year-old Homo erectus fossils. Visiting to see Africa's wildlife in the world's largest crater is a life-changing Tanzania experience.
