Introduction

Lake Shikotsu lies in the southwest of Chitose, Hokkaido, and is the most representative caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, formed about 40,000 years ago when a volcano erupted and the basin filled with water. It is one of the clearest lakes in Japan, with a maximum depth of over 300 meters. Ringed by mountains such as Mount Eniwa and Mount Fuppushi, the shore offers hot springs, sightseeing boats and campsites. In summer you can cruise, cycle or paddle a canoe; in winter the Shikotsu Lake Ice Festival fills the nights with illuminated ice sculptures. About an hour's drive from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport, it is a popular nature getaway with different scenery in every season.
