Giethoorn

Introduction

Giethoorn, deep in the Overijssel polders, is a roadless village often called the Venice of the North. Peat cutters in the 18th century hauled up heaps of goat horns from the riverbed — hence the name. Canals weave between reed-thatched farmhouses, linked by 176 wooden arched bridges, with electric whisper boats moored at every door. Drifting through the reeds you hear only water and birds; in winter the canals freeze and villagers skate to each other's doors. Rent a boat early in the morning to beat the crowds, or walk the towpaths past flower bridges for the village at its most everyday.
