Cardboard Cathedral
The Cardboard Cathedral, formally the Transitional Cathedral, stands on Hereford Street in Christchurch. Built to replace the cathedral damaged in the 2011 earthquake, it opened in 2013 as a temporary Anglican cathedral. Designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, it uses paper tubes as its main structural elements alongside timber and steel, creating a striking A-frame facade and coloured glass that seats several hundred people. Despite the name, the structure is rigorously engineered for long-term earthquake and weather performance. Set in the city's rebuild zone, surrounded by recovering shops and public space, it is a defining marker of post-quake Christchurch.
