Lake Tekapo lies on the South Island plateau of New Zealand, its dreamy milky-blue color coming from glacial rock flour in the meltwater. The lakeside Church of the Good Shepherd is one of the world's most-photographed small churches, a postcard scene against snow mountains and blue water. Every Nov–Dec, lupins along the shore burst into bloom, purple and pink filling the banks. It is the Southern Hemisphere's first international dark-sky reserve; far from light pollution the Milky Way blazes, and Mount John Observatory is a stargazing mecca. Blue lake, snow peaks, flowers and stars make Tekapo one of the South Island's most dreamlike destinations.
