Roy's Peak Track
Rising 1,578 metres above Lake Wanaka on New Zealand's South Island, Roy's Peak is famed for a track that climbs relentlessly through alpine grassland to a razor-thin ridge. The final section walks a narrow spine with deep valleys on both sides — one of New Zealand's most photogenic day hikes. The return trip is about 16 km with over 1,200 m of elevation gain and demands decent fitness. From the summit, Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea and the Southern Alps unfold in a 360-degree panorama, magical at sunrise.
