Roy's Peak Track
Roy's Peak is Wanaka's iconic day hike, a steady 5.2 km zigzag climb gaining some 1,200 metres above the lake town. The reward at the top is a sweeping panorama over Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps and the glacier-carved Matukituki Valley — a view so photogenic it has become one of New Zealand's most-shared Instagram shots. The track has no huts and little shade, so carry water and start early; sunrise and sunset light are especially dramatic, and proper footwear is essential.
