The Lord of the Rings made it famous: Isengard, Lothlorien and Misty Mountains scenes were filmed in the nearby Dart Valley and Paradise. Drive the Glenorchy-Paradise gravel road north as lake bays, peaks and pastures unfold, herds of cattle wandering the road, to the aptly named Paradise at its end. The town itself is a few streets: the red shed, signposts pointing to the world's cities, a cafe — the purest distillation of South Island road-trip spirit. Queenstown is 40 minutes away along one of the world's most scenic lake roads.

Arrowtown
Arrowtown is a historic gold-mining town near Queenstown on New Zealand's South Island. Chinese miners settled here in the 1860s, leaving one of the best-preserved Chinese settlements in the southern hemisphere. Buckingham Street, the main thoroughfare, is lined with Victorian wooden buildings, cafes, galleries and craft shops. Each April the poplars turn gold and the Arrowtown Autumn Festival draws visitors from across the country. Gold can still be panned in the Arrow River at the end of the street, and the mountain-and-river setting looks like a postcard in every season.
