Introduction

Glenorchy sits 45 km northwest of Queenstown where Lake Wakatipu narrows into the Dart and Rees rivers. The red boatshed pier reaches into turquoise water, backed by the snowcapped Richardson Mountains and beech forest. The Lord of the Rings made it famous: Isengard, Lothlorien and Misty Mountains scenes were filmed in the nearby Dart Valley and Paradise. Drive the Glenorchy-Paradise gravel road north as lake bays, peaks and pastures unfold, herds of cattle wandering the road, to the aptly named Paradise at its end. The town itself is a few streets: the red shed, signposts pointing to the world's cities, a cafe — the purest distillation of South Island road-trip spirit. Queenstown is 40 minutes away along one of the world's most scenic lake roads.
