Harar is a walled medieval Islamic city in eastern Ethiopia, often called the 'fourth holy city of Islam in the Horn of Africa' and listed by UNESCO in 2006. Within less than one square kilometre of walls sit 82 mosques and 102 shrines, along with narrow alleys, traditional houses and colourful facades. It was home at one time to the poet Rimbaud, and it is famous for its lively markets and the astonishing nightly hyena-feeding ritual. The city's coming-of-age traditions and coffee culture keep it distinctively Harari.
