📍 Destination Overview
Lalibela, a highland town in northern Ethiopia near 2,500 metres, is famed for eleven churches hewn from solid red volcanic rock. Around 1190 King Lalibela commissioned them to create a New Jerusalem in Ethiopia. The cruciform St George's Church is the most photogenic site. Every January 7, thousands of white-robed pilgrims circle the churches in prayer.
