The National Museum of Libya, also known as the Red Castle Museum (As-Saraya Al-Hamra), occupies the red fortress overlooking the port in the centre of Tripoli, the capital. It is Libya's most comprehensive museum, with about 47 halls covering Neolithic rock art, Phoenician, ancient Roman (sculpture and mosaics), Byzantine, Islamic art and Libyan ethnography. Closed for a long period after the 2011 Libyan revolution, it has reopened to the public in recent years.

Leptis Magna, on Libya's northwestern coast near Al-Khums, about 120 km east of Tripoli, is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It reached its zenith under the Emperor Septimius Severus in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD, with grand amphitheatre, theatre, triumphal arch, baths and exquisite mosaics and statues, and is often called one of the 'finest Roman cities in the Mediterranean'.
