📍 Destination Overview

El Calafate, on the shore of Lake Argentino in Argentine Patagonia, is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. Its highlight is Perito Moreno Glacier, a wall of blue ice some five kilometres wide and sixty metres high, where blocks periodically break away and thunder into the lake, best seen from walkways or by boat. Nearby El Chaltén is a hiking refuge beneath Fitz Roy.

In the Southern Hemisphere, El Calafate has a cold Patagonian climate. Summer (Oct-Mar) is relatively mild and the best time for glacier trekking and sightseeing. Winter (Jun-Aug) is cold and some activities are limited. Bring warm, windproof clothing year-round. The Argentine Peso fluctuates greatly.
