El Chalten, at the foot of Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre on the eastern Andes in Argentine Patagonia, was founded in 1985. Called the trekking capital of Argentina, it offers dozens of free trails. The classic Laguna de los Tres hike leads to a glacial lake beneath Fitz Roy, its granite spire piercing the sky, and the town also serves the famed Perito Moreno Glacier.
