📍 Destination Overview
Potosi, in Bolivia at about 4,000 meters, is one of the world's highest cities. Vast silver from Cerro Rico at its foot during Spanish rule once made it among the wealthiest cities of the Americas, forging the legend of the 'Rich Mountain.' The grand colonial buildings survive, above all the Royal Mint, now a museum telling its silver story; the site is a UNESCO listing.

Cathedral of Potosí
The Cathedral Basilica of Potosí stands on Plaza 25 de Mayo in the heart of Potosí, Bolivia, the spiritual and urban symbol of the city that was once the world's largest silver mining center. The original church was built in the 16th century during the early silver boom; the present Neoclassical building was designed by architect Manuel Sanjinés, begun in 1809 and completed in 1838. The symmetrical twin-tower facade rises above a tall dome, with a three-nave interior that displays colonial religious paintings, silver reliquaries and Baroque altars. Potosí's immense silver wealth is reflected in the cathedral's scale and ornament; inscribed as part of the City of Potosí UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, it is the key landmark for understanding the religious and economic history of a colonial mining city.

Cerro Rico Mines
Cerro Rico, the rich mountain towering over Potosi, Bolivia, made the city the richest in the hemisphere after silver was found in 1545 — and earned the old town UNESCO status. Miners still hack tin, zinc and silver from its dark, damp tunnels today. Descending with a local guide is a visceral experience: first buy gifts at the miners' market — Coca-Cola, coca leaves, strong liquor, even dynamite — then don a helmet and headlamp to crawl the narrow galleries and feel four centuries of mining history up close. Hot, dusty and claustrophobic, the 2-3 hour tour demands fitness and nerve, but it is essential education in Bolivia's story.
Cultural Activities
Casa de la Moneda
The National Mint of Bolivia (Casa Nacional de la Moneda) in Potosí is one of the city's most important colonial buildings and museums, built in the 18th century to strike silver coins from the Cerro Rico mines. The present structure, rebuilt in 1759 in Baroque masonry around a central courtyard, served as the Spanish royal mint and was once the core of global silver coin production. The museum displays colonial minting machinery, coin dies, religious art, colonial furniture, indigenous and miner life artifacts, the famous painting \"Virgen del Cerro\" and Andean Baroque canvases. It comprehensively shows how Potosí's silver powered the global colonial economy, making it an irreplaceable site for world economic history from the 16th to 19th centuries and Latin American colonial history; inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1987.
Museum

Convento de San Francisco
Founded in the 1540s, the Convento de San Francisco is among the oldest religious buildings in Potosí, the fabled silver city. Its surviving baroque stone facade, completed in the early 18th century, is a textbook of Andean mestizo baroque — twisted Solomonic columns wreathed in carved vines. Visits include the catacombs where the remains of mining-era dead once rested, and the monks' former quarters. From the rooftop terrace, a sea of red tiles rises toward the cone of Cerro Rico, the mountain whose silver bankrolled empires — Potosí's most iconic view.
Church & Religious Site

Convento Museo Santa Teresa
Founded around 1685 with the fortune of a wealthy mine owner's widow, the Convento de Santa Teresa housed cloistered Carmelite nuns for more than three centuries before part of it opened as a museum in the 20th century. Visitors pass through a serene Renaissance courtyard into the nuns' choir, sacristy and religious art halls, where 17th- and 18th-century paintings, sculpture and silverwork survive in remarkable condition. In the upper cloister, a discreet grille window marks where nuns once watched religious processions in the street below — a hidden screen between enclosure and the world.
Church & Religious Site

Torre de la Compañía
The Torre de la Compañía rises beside Potosí's main plaza — a freestanding bell tower of about six stories, built around 1708 for the Jesuit church of San Martín. Fashioned from rosy stone with stacked arched openings and capped by a small dome, it is a superb specimen of Andean mestizo baroque applied to the tower form, and arguably the most photographed facade in Potosí. The city's UNESCO-listed historic core leans on this tower as its visual anchor. Those who climb it are rewarded with views over the plaza toward Cerro Rico.
