Arles sits on the Rhone in southern France—a Provencal city of double fame as a major Roman centre and where Van Gogh painted in 1888-89. Arles is at its best in April–June and September–October, when the light is soft, crowds thin and the lanes ideal for photography; July hosts the great photo festival but brings heat and bustle. Recommended: climb the Roman arena for rooftop views, wander the ancient theatre and Constantine baths, then follow Van Gogh's trail through the streets to the gallery for the originals, finishing beside the Rhône as the light turns golden. With time to spare, drive to the Camargue for flamingos. Compact and walkable, it doubles as a base for Avignon, medieval villages and the southern coast. Expect tourist-town prices and book early in season. Roman stone, Provençal sunlight and one Dutch painter together make Arles uniquely compelling.
