📍 Destination Overview
Fontainebleau, just outside Paris, is a royal town. The palace, begun in the 12th century and extended by François I, Henri II and Napoleon, is a living textbook of French architecture; the gallery of François I's murals and stucco mark the height of Renaissance decoration. Its forest, France's largest royal hunting ground, surrounds it, and here Napoleon signed his abdication in 1814.
