Mtskheta is an ancient Georgian capital and Orthodox holy city at the confluence of two rivers; its group of monuments is a World Heritage site, and May-Jun and Sep-Oct are pleasant. In the city stands Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where kings were crowned and buried (its name from the legend of the miraculous cedar pillar); atop a high cliff stands the 6th-century Jvari Monastery, from which you can overlook the magnificent meeting of the Kura and Aragvi and the ancient city resting in the valley. About 30 min from Tbilisi, it is often visited with the capital in a day; churches require modest dress and women should bring a headscarf.
