Kazbek (Stepantsminda) is a snowy mountain town deep in the Greater Caucasus at about 1,740 m. Best Jun–Sep, when roads are open and the snow peak is visible; in winter snow closes the road and only a 4WD can ascend. The most iconic image is the Gergeti Trinity Church, perched on a green peak at about 2,170 m against the 5,047 m Mount Kazbek — reach it by a several-hour hike or a 4WD from the town. The Georgian Military Highway on the way is itself a grand journey (Cross Pass, Ananuri Fortress). High altitude and colder summit need warm clothing.
