A walled town on a hill in the Kakheti wine country of eastern Georgia, with red-brick buildings, balcony houses and cobblestone streets overlooking the Alazani Valley and the distant snow-capped Caucasus mountains, known as the City of Love for its romantic atmosphere

📍 Destination Overview

Sighnaghi is a delicate, picturesque hill town in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia, perched on a hill overlooking the vast Alazani Valley. Fondly known as the City of Love for its romantic charm, it is the gateway to Georgia's wine country and one of its most enchanting small towns. The town itself is like a fine work of art: brick buildings with red-tiled roofs, Italian-style old houses with finely carved wooden balconies, winding cobblestone streets, and an elegant clock tower and square together create a warm, romantic Mediterranean-style townscape where every step is picture-perfect. Embracing the whole town is a well-preserved ancient city wall stretching several kilometers with over twenty towers — one of the largest surviving city walls in Georgia. You can walk along the wall, overlooking the red-roofed town on one side and taking in the endless, green rolling Alazani Valley and, on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the distant Greater Caucasus range on the other, with an extraordinarily open and magnificent view. Kakheti, where Sighnaghi lies, is Georgia's most celebrated wine region — the birthplace of the 8,000-year-old Georgian traditional Qvevri clay-pot winemaking method, surrounded by vineyards and wineries where you can taste authentic Georgian wine and visit cellars, with the grape harvest and winemaking season arriving in September–October. With its red-roofed town, embracing walls and rich wine country, Sighnaghi is romantic and captivating, best visited in spring and autumn, especially during the golden autumn winemaking season.
