Introduction
Quebec City's old walls are the only complete fortification walls preserved north of Mexico in North America, extending about 4.6 km around the upper town of the old city—a key reason the city is listed as a World Cultural Heritage. These stone walls, bastions, gates and batteries, begun in the French period and later reinforced by the British, witness Quebec's military history as a North American strategic fortress. Visitors can walk a full loop atop the walls, overlooking the old city, the St. Lawrence River and the new city from above, passing through ancient gates like Saint-Louis and Saint-Jean. At one end, the "Citadelle" is still an active military installation; join a guided tour to watch the Changing of the Guard. Walking the old walls is a unique way to touch Quebec's centuries of military and colonial history.
