Tomás Guardia Central Park is the heart of Liberia, capital of Guanacaste province, Costa Rica. Named after President Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez, this central square is surrounded by a white colonial-style church, historic buildings and palm shade — the core gathering and leisure space for Liberia's residents. Liberia, known as "La Ciudad Blanca" (the White City) for its traditional white adobe buildings, is the capital of Guanacaste. The park is the city's soul — a central gazebo and green space ringed by Liberia's oldest church, municipal hall and colonial buildings. At dusk, residents chat on benches and children play — the best place to experience Costa Rica's "Pura Vida" spirit. Visiting to feel the slow pace and community warmth in a colonial square of the "White City" is a relaxed, authentic Central American urban experience.

The Catedral de Alajuela stands in the centre of Alajuela and is the city's cathedral, an important religious and civic landmark. Built of red brick and stone with a dignified facade, its bell tower is prominent on the city skyline, and the interior is lofty, preserving religious paintings and decoration. The cathedral faces the central park and square, surrounded by Alajuela's commercial and administrative core, busy with people through the day. Close to both San José and Juan Santamaría airport, it is often fitted in en route to or from the capital, and is a core stop for understanding the city's history and religious life.

Poás Volcano rises in Costa Rica's Central Range as one of Earth's largest active craters—its main crater spans over a kilometer and perpetually exhales sulfur steam, its lake shifting eerie blues, greens and milky whites with chemistry and weather. The park is wrapped in cloud forest: lush vegetation, birds and hummingbirds dart among trails from the visitor center to the crater-edge viewpoint. Because of volcanic activity and winds, opening hours and stay time are strictly limited; visitors glimpse this breath of the planet within a tight window—among Costa Rica's most awe-inspiring yet accessible volcanic experiences.

The Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría in central Alajuela is named after Costa Rica's national hero, commemorating his death in 1856 while resisting a foreign invader. Housed in a historic building, its displays cover the hero's life, the mid-19th-century situation in Central America and the history of Alajuela, with documents, objects and photographs — the most direct place to understand this period. Modest in size and about an hour long, it sits close to the central park and cathedral, a good stop on a walk through Alajuela and convenient before or after the airport.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens, in the Vara Blanca area of Alajuela province near Volcán Poás, combines waterfalls, rainforest and animal displays. Built along a river valley, its trails link several waterfall viewpoints, the sound and spray of water creating a cool, damp atmosphere, while hummingbird, butterfly and frog displays and an aviary appear along the way. Sitting in the cloud-forest belt, the weather is changeable and the ground wet, so watch your footing. About an hour-plus from San José, it is often combined with Volcán Poás in one day — one of the more accessible natural sights of the central highlands.

Sarchí, in Alajuela province, is Costa Rica's best-known craft town, famous above all for its painted oxcarts (carretas). Once used to haul coffee, these vividly coloured wooden carts have become a national cultural symbol, and the town's workshops and shops display everything from miniature ornaments to full-size carts, where you can watch craftsmen painting the patterns. Besides oxcarts, there are workshops for furniture, woodwork and souvenirs — good for local gifts. Not far from Alajuela and San José and easy to reach, Sarchí is often fitted into trips to Volcán Poás or the coffee country.
