Rovinj Travel Guide

A romantic fishing port on the west coast of Istria — a colourful-housed peninsula old town, a towering bell tower and cobblestone alleys, a Mediterranean pearl of Venetian flair.

📍 Destination Overview

Rovinj sits on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula in northwest Croatia, a romantic, picture-perfect colourful fishing-port town that long belonged to the Republic of Venice and still overflows with Venetian charm today. The old town is built on a small peninsula jutting into the Adriatic; house after house in ochre yellow, pink-orange, terracotta red and cream white cluster together, climbing the hill and reflecting in the turquoise sea, beautiful like an oil painting. Narrow cobblestone alleyways wind upward between the houses, with laundry drying, blossoming flowers and weathered walls making a photo at every turn — a photographer's paradise. At the highest point of the peninsula stands the towering bell tower of the Church of St. Euphemia, modelled after St. Mark's Campanile in Venice; climbing to the top overlooks the entire colourful old town and the islands scattered across the sea. In the evening, the old town's seafront fills with people watching the sunset as fishing boats return to port and the sky blazes with colour. The surrounding Istria region is rich in truffles, olive oil and wine, with tempting cuisine. The colourful houses, the Venetian bell tower and the romantic harbour make Rovinj overwhelmingly beautiful.
