Introduction

The Church of St Euphemia crowns the highest point of Rovinj's Old Town, visible from almost anywhere in this Istrian port. Built between 1725 and 1736 in Baroque style over the foundations of an earlier church, its 61-metre campanile is modelled on St Mark's in Venice and topped by a bronze of Euphemia. Behind the altar rests a Roman sarcophagus of Proconnesian marble which local tradition says vanished from Constantinople around AD 800 and drifted across the sea to wash ashore at Rovinj; it holds the relics of St Euphemia of Chalcedon, martyred under Diocletian and the town's patron saint. To the right of the entrance, a carving shows the saint cradling Rovinj, and two murals by the sarcophagus depict the Romans throwing Euphemia to the lions and the sarcophagus's arrival at Rovinj. Entry is free but respectful dress is required or you may be turned away, and the bell tower climb costs a small fee. The church opens daily in summer and at mass times otherwise. The view from the top is among the finest in Istria - west over the Adriatic and its islands, east into the peninsula's interior.
