Cēsis is the best-preserved medieval knightly old town deep in the Gauja Valley; summer-autumn, May-Oct, is best (autumn colours are pleasant). At its heart is the magnificent red-brick ruin of the Livonian Order's Cēsis Castle. The most unique experience is carrying a medieval-style candle lantern up the dim stone steps exploring the old tower and reaching the top to overlook the town, as if travelling back to the knightly age. Next to the castle are the 18th-century New Castle and manor park; the old town has cobblestone streets and colourful wooden houses. About 1.5 hours from Riga, often combined with Sigulda.
