May–Sep is good for hiking, while the golden autumn (around Sep–Oct), when the woods blaze with color, is Latvia's finest foliage season. Don't miss the red-brick Turaida Castle across the river (climb the tower for the valley view) and its rose garden, the cable car gliding over the golden sea of trees, and the Gutmana sandstone cave. The valley is cool — bring a coat. About 1 hour from Riga, often done as a day trip, and can be combined with Cesis.
