📍 Destination Overview

Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, built above the deep gorges cut by the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers — a historic capital of uniquely dramatic geography and cityscape in Europe. The entire old town sits on a high plateau (the Bock cliff) surrounded by deep gorges on three sides with steep cliffs, where natural defenses and man-made fortifications combined to make it one of Europe's strongest fortresses in history, known as the 'Gibraltar of the North,' and its old town and fortifications are collectively listed as a World Heritage Site. What is most stunning about Luxembourg City is its terrain-shaped, multi-level urban layout: the old town center sits high on a cliff plateau, while dozens of meters below at the gorge bottom (called the Grund) lie green parks, winding rivers, old stone bridges and lower-lying houses; the upper and lower towns are linked by viaducts, panoramic elevators and steep stone stairs. Leaning on the railing at the cliff edge of the upper town, you take in the gorge, green spaces, old bridges and the old castle on the opposite bank — a picture of grand beauty. As a former stronghold, the city still preserves long stretches of ancient walls, fortresses and, most uniquely, the Bock Casemates — a kilometers-long, multi-level underground defense tunnel and artillery system carved inside the cliff rock, open to visit and experience the military ingenuity of this fortress city. In the upper town are also the Grand Ducal Palace, Constitution Square (with the Golden Lady monument overlooking the gorge), Notre-Dame Cathedral and an elegant pedestrian shopping district. The deep gorges, sturdy fortress and vertical old town make Luxembourg City grand and unique; spring to autumn (May–Sep) has the best weather and it is the gateway to any Luxembourg trip.

Luxembourg City is the capital built above deep gorges on a steep cliff plateau; once impregnable and called the 'Gibraltar of the North,' its old town and fortifications are World Heritage, and spring to autumn (May–Sep) has the best weather. Its layout is grand and vertical: the old town sits high on the cliff plateau, while the gorge bottom below (the Grund) is lush with winding rivers and stone bridges; the upper and lower towns are linked by bridges, elevators and stairs, and the view from the railing is picture-perfect. You can explore the Bock Casemates, kilometers of underground tunnels carved into the cliff rock. The upper town has the Grand Ducal Palace, the Golden Lady of Constitution Square and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Public transport is free throughout Luxembourg.
