Varadero Travel Guide

Parque Josone is a green pocket at the heart of Varadero, created in 1942 by Spanish immigrant Jose Iturrioz and his wife Onelia—the name fuses the couple's first names. Across roughly nine hectares of tropical grounds, a calm lake anchors the center while peacocks stroll beneath royal palms and swan-shaped pedal boats drift by. Two venerable restaurants, La Campana and Dante, anchor the town's culinary memory, and at dusk Cuban son bands play lakeside as local families and visitors share the iron chairs.

Cueva de Ambrosio lies within the Varahicacos ecological reserve on the northern tip of the Varadero peninsula. Its walls hold some 47 pre-Columbian pictographs—red and black concentric circles, sun symbols, and abstract figures that have endured for centuries. In colonial times the cave sheltered runaway enslaved people, and legend holds that Ambrosio was one of these cimarrones. A forest walk of about fifteen minutes leads to the entrance, where guides point out pictographs sharing the same rock face as stalactites—archaeology and geology within arm's reach of each other.

Varadero's municipal museum occupies a wooden villa from around the 1920s, one of the hurricane-proof North American-style houses that formed the resort's earliest skyline. The small galleries trace the peninsula's transformation from salt flats and fishing village to vacation capital: founding families' photographs and old land deeds share cases with vintage bathing suits, while a handful of indigenous artifacts prove an older human presence.
