El Nicho hides in the Escambray mountains of northern Cienfuegos province, where a staircase of waterfalls hangs in the valley above Lake Hanabanilla and the main cascade plunges into a swimmable natural pool. A forest trail climbs past a series of ever-higher viewpoints, each framing the water from a new angle, and lucky visitors spot the tocororo—Cuba's national bird—perched along the way. The drive from Cienfuegos takes around two hours on winding but decent mountain roads, usually combined with lake viewpoints into a full-day outing.

Palacio de Valle stands at the southern tip of the Punta Gorda peninsula in Cienfuegos, completed in 1917 for the Spanish-born magnate Acisclo del Valle. Its architects folded Gothic, Baroque, Rococo, and Moorish elements into a single building—polychrome tiled domes, carved arch windows, and mismatched towers that look almost flamboyant beside the city's sober neoclassical streets. Today the palace houses a restaurant and a viewing tower; from the top, the shipping lanes of Jagua Bay unfold below, and at sunset the whole city seems to pour its light into the water.

Parque Jose Marti is ground zero for Cienfuegos: French colonists laid the city's first stone here in 1819, and the square still keeps its 19th-century symmetry of palms and pale facades—a drawing room for the so-called Pearl of the South. On its edge stands the Triumphal Arch of 1902, reputedly the only one of its kind in Cuba, beside the obelisk marking the founding ceremony. The surrounding ring is a checklist of landmarks: the Purisima Concepcion cathedral, the blue facade of Palacio Ferrer, and the Tomas Terry theatre two minutes away. The historic center joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005, and the park is the natural place to start.
