Flam Travel Guide

A village at the head of a Sognefjord arm, hub of the famous Flåm Railway and cruise gateway to UNESCO Nærøyfjord.

📍 Destination Overview

Flåm, a tiny village at the head of a Sognefjord arm, Norway's longest fjord, is a classic fjord hub. Its pride is the Flåm Railway, among the world's most beautiful, spiralling almost 900 m in twenty kilometres through gorges, waterfalls and peaks. The narrow, UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord is reached by cruise from Flåm, making it the highlight of any fjord journey.

Flåm sits deep at the end of an arm of the Sognefjord and is a classic hub for fjord sightseeing; the fjord season from May to September is best (long days, full waterfalls). Its signature is the Flåm Railway—hailed as one of the world's most beautiful railways (climbing nearly 900 m, with a stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall)—and the cruise into the World Heritage Nærøyfjord (as narrow as about 250 m, with thousand-metre cliffs). In peak season, train and boat tickets should be booked in advance (often as part of the Norway in a Nutshell combo). It lies between Bergen and Oslo.
