The Belém Tower stands on a rocky outcrop where the Tagus meets the sea in Lisbon — a Manueline fortress built in the early 16th century and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 as part of the city's monumental celebrations of the Age of Discovery. Its walls are decorated with twisted ropes, carved beasts and motifs of the 'Discoveries', and the tower served in turn as a defensive bastion, a customs post and a prison. A narrow spiral stair leads to the top, where visitors look out over the river mouth, the Jerónimos Monastery and the 25 April Bridge — a vivid emblem of Portugal's golden age of navigation.

The Oceanario de Lisboa opened with Expo '98 on the Parque das Nacoes waterfront and is among Europe's largest and best-loved aquariums. Designed by American architect Peter Chermayeff, its vast octagonal central tank rises like a column of deep sea at the building's heart, ringed by Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Antarctic habitat galleries, with sharks and rays gliding overhead. Around 800 species — sea otters, penguins, sunfish and forests of jellyfish — fill a visit of two to three hours. A favourite with families, its pioneering conservation and seawater systems also make it a textbook modern aquarium: Lisbon's essential rainy-day destination.

Jerónimos Monastery
The Jeronimos Monastery rises in Belem, Lisbon, begun in 1501 by order of King Manuel I to celebrate Vasco da Gama's sea route to India — the supreme statement of Manueline architecture. Its south portal drips with carved ropes, anchors, armillary spheres and sea monsters, chiselling the Age of Discovery into stone; inside, octagonal columns rise like palms to vaults flooded with light through filigree windows. Vasco da Gama's tomb and the poet Camoes rest within the church. A UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Belem Tower, the monastery ends perfectly a few minutes' walk away at Pasteis de Belem, where warm pasteis de nata await.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos
The Padrao dos Descobrimentos rises on the Tagus waterfront in Belem, Lisbon, unveiled in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. The monument takes the shape of a caravel ready to sail: Henry stands at the prow with a small vessel in hand, flanked by 32 figures of the Age of Discovery — Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Camoes and more — carved in stone. Before it, a vast world map inlaid in the plaza marks the dates Portuguese mariners reached each shore. A lift carries you to the rooftop terrace for views over Belem Tower, the Jeronimos Monastery and the 25 de Abril bridge, best an hour before sunset.
