The Pena National Palace crowns a misty peak above Sintra, Portugal — the pinnacle of 19th-century Romanticism, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 as part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra. Quinta da Regaleira is the most mysterious estate in Sintra, commissioned by the wealthy Carvalho Monteiro and blending Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance motifs. Its famed Initiation Well is an inverted 27-metre tower whose spiral stair symbolises alchemical and Masonic journeys. Tunnels, fountains and symbols fill the gardens — among the most imaginative corners of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra.

The Moors' Castle clings to a ridge among the hills of Sintra, a defensive fortress built by North African Moors in the 8th–9th centuries; its ruined walls and towers serpentine along the steep crest. Following the winding path to the highest point, visitors look down on the Pena Palace, the town of Sintra and the Atlantic beyond. Among moss-flecked stones and battlements echo the distant reverberations of the Iberian Reconquista — a rugged, poetic stroke within the Cultural Landscape of Sintra.

Dominating central Sintra for over six centuries, the National Palace is instantly recognised by its two enormous white conical chimneys. As one of the Portuguese royal family's longest-inhabited palaces, it layers Moorish, Gothic and Manueline styles: the vast medieval royal kitchen, halls lined with sixteenth-century azulejo tiles, and the carved wooden ceiling of the Swan Room are standout sights. The route is compact, with the core rooms taking about an hour, and the palace sits within easy walking distance of the train and bus hub, making it the most convenient stop among Sintra's palaces.

Tucked deep in the romantic landscapes on the far side of Sintra's hills, Monserrate Palace was built in the nineteenth century for the English baronet Francis Cook. Its white dome and exotic Arab-inspired carvings rise from a remarkable botanical garden, and Lord Byron famously celebrated the estate's ruins and glens in his poetry. Rare plants from five continents surround fountains, waterfalls and the path of an old chapel ruin. Far less crowded than Pena Palace, it rewards unhurried travellers with the full romantic spirit that earned Sintra its World Heritage status.
