Uppsala Castle was initiated by Gustav Vasa in the 16th century and expanded by later kings — a leading example of Swedish Renaissance fortification. Raised on a high platform above the city and river, it saw major events like the Sture murders and now houses the Uppsala County Museum, whose collections span royal power and Swedish science.

Uppsala Botanical Garden (Botaniska tradgarden), originally founded in 1655 and operated by Uppsala University, is one of Sweden's oldest botanical gardens and a revered academic sanctuary where Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern taxonomy, worked and conducted his groundbreaking research for many years. The garden's current location adjacent to Uppsala Castle encompasses approximately 13 hectares and cultivates over 9,000 living plant species from around the world, including rare alpine plants, medicinal herbs, and Arctic flora that reflect Sweden's northern latitude and botanical diversity. The grounds preserve the original layout of Linnaeus's "Systematic Garden," which arranged plants according to his revolutionary sexual classification system, along with a 19th-century-style palm greenhouse, an alpine rock garden, and historic orangery buildings. Functioning as a combined research facility, educational institution, and public park, the garden offers distinct seasonal displays—from spring bulb extravaganzas to autumn foliage—and serves as both a pilgrimage site for botany enthusiasts and an active research center contributing to plant conservation, taxonomy, and public education about biodiversity and the natural world.

Uppsala Cathedral is the largest church in Scandinavia; its Gothic twin towers rise about 118 metres and, since the 13th century, it has been the place of Swedish coronations and royal burials. The relics of St Erik, the tomb of Gustav Vasa and the soaring nave make it the supreme symbol of Sweden's national and religious memory.

The Linnaeus Garden and Museum sit in Uppsala, the home and garden of Carl Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy. The garden was restored to Linnaeus's own 1745 design and arranged by his plant classification system; across the street, his former home displays manuscripts, specimens and his life — a living site for understanding the origins of modern natural history.

Gamla Uppsala was the great pre-Christian sacred site of Sweden: three huge royal burial mounds from around the 6th century stand in a row, by legend the graves of ancient pagan kings, while medieval writers described the place as a Nordic cult centre. The adjacent museum reinterprets the site through current archaeology, and a 12th-century stone church and meadow trails weave myth and fact together — all just a few kilometres from modern Uppsala.

Uppsala's city library is the living room of this university town: beyond hundreds of thousands of volumes, you'll find quiet study rooms, a children's section and a local-history room. The modernised reading spaces are flooded with light, with city views through tall windows. On a rainy day, reading a book, catching a small exhibition or simply watching academic life drift past the glass rivals any paid attraction — and it's entirely free.
