Bursa, on the southern Sea of Marmara at the foot of Mount Uludag, is the early capital and birthplace of the Ottoman Empire. Green Bursa is famed for refined Ottoman architecture: the blue-green tiles of the Yesil Mosque and Tomb, and the domes of the Ulu Mosque. Silk bazaars and spice markets fill the old town; Uludag offers skiing and hiking, an easy ferry trip from Istanbul.
