📍 Destination Overview
Pamukkale is a famous natural wonder in southwestern Turkey. Calcium carbonate deposited over millennia from its thermal waters has formed layer upon layer of snow-white travertine terraces on the hillside, with azure thermal pools nestled among them like a fairyland on earth—its Turkish name means 'Cotton Castle.' Above the terraces lies the Greco-Roman ancient city of Hierapolis, preserving a grand theatre, avenues and a vast necropolis. The thermal pool where Cleopatra is said to have bathed is still open for a dip, and soaking among scattered ancient columns is a special delight. Kaklik Caves
The Kaklik Caves are often called 'Pamukkale underground': a thermal spring flows over travertine terraces inside the cavern, feeding stalactites and flowstone of the same origin as the famous white cascades above ground — except all of it happens in the dark. Discovered after a collapse, the cave stays humid with constant dripping, and the most photogenic moment comes when daylight pours through the collapsed skylight. Located near the village of Kaklık about 30 km north of Pamukkale, it sees a fraction of the crowds, letting you enjoy an inverted Pamukkale in underground silence.

The Antique Pool — Cleopatra's Pool — hides at the top of Pamukkale's white terraces inside the Hierapolis ruins: an earthquake in the 7th century toppled colonnades into the spring, and today broken marble columns lie half-submerged in water held at about 36°C year-round. Buy a ticket and you can swim among two-thousand-year-old ruins. Rich in calcium and minerals, the pool blends bathing with sightseeing — the most languid hour of any Pamukkale itinerary. It sits beside the travertine entrance, so most visitors soak here after touring the ruins and linger until sunset gilds the terraces pink.

Pamukkale Natural Park
Set at the southern foot of Pamukkale's blinding white travertine shelves, this open green space doubles as the natural gateway to the Hierapolis–Pamukkale World Heritage area. A small lake fringed with reeds mirrors the chalk cliffs above, while plane trees shade picnicking local families — a far calmer scene than the barefoot queues on the terraces themselves. In early morning light the whole cliff blushes pink, and on clear days tandem paragliders lift off from the nearby ridge and drift above the white cascades. Treat the park as a warm-up before the ruins, or a quiet wind-down after them.
