Stanley Park is a giant urban park northwest of downtown Vancouver, about 400 hectares—larger than New York's Central Park—surrounded by water on three sides and preserving large tracts of original temperate rainforest. It is Vancouver's proud green lung. The park's most famous feature is the about 8.8 km Seawall encircling the peninsula, for walking or cycling, offering views of the bay, snow mountains, the Lions Gate Bridge and the city skyline along the way. Inside are also Indigenous totem poles, a lighthouse, rose gardens and the Vancouver Aquarium. Ancient trees, sea views and wildlife intertwine—Stanley Park perfectly blends city and nature, a not-to-be-missed Vancouver landmark.

Butchart Gardens, in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island some 20 minutes from Victoria, is among the world's most celebrated family gardens. In 1904 Jennie Butchart planted her first sweet peas in the exhausted limestone quarry of her husband's cement works; a century on, the gardens cover 55 acres with a thousand species across four seasons. The Sunken Garden terraces the quarry pit with spring cherry and azalea waves; Italian and Rose Gardens peak in summer, maples blaze in autumn, and Christmas lights turn it fairy-tale. Summer Saturday fireworks and concerts add spectacle, while the Blue Poppy restaurant and afternoon tea reward garden strolls. Wheelchair-friendly throughout and served by direct buses from Victoria — the island's unmissable horticultural shrine.

Canada Place is Vancouver's most recognizable landmark — five white sail-like roof panels like wind-filled sails — serving as a convention centre, cruise-ship terminal and waterfront gateway. Jutting into Burrard Inlet, its observation areas overlook the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park and arriving cruise ships. Inside, experiences like FlyOver Canada make it the starting point to feel Vancouver's seaport character.

Operated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Capilano River Hatchery in North Vancouver lets visitors observe Pacific salmon migration, spawning and fry hatching up close through glass fish ladders and viewing windows. It is a free fish-viewing and science-learning site close to the city, near the Capilano River and Cleveland Dam.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is one of Vancouver's classic nature spots, centred on a 137 m bridge swaying ~70 m above the Capilano River Canyon through old-growth rainforest. Newer 'Treetops Adventure' walkways and the thrilling glass 'Cliffwalk' arm let visitors experience the temperate rainforest at different heights. Indigenous totem poles and cultural displays add human depth. Just ~30 minutes from downtown, it is the easiest pristine-forest escape by the city.

Granville Island sits on the shore of False Creek south of downtown Vancouver. A former industrial area, it has transformed into a cultural peninsula full of art and food, one of Vancouver's most vibrant leisure spots. The heart of the island is the lively Public Market, brimming with fresh produce, cooked food, bakery, cheese and artisan foods. There are also many artist studios, craft shops, theaters, breweries and a children's playground, with gulls circling and street performers ongoing. You can arrive by mini-ferry across False Creek from downtown, enjoying the water view.
