Bilbao Travel Guide

A reborn Basque city, its Guggenheim's titanium curves and old-quarter cuisine marking a rise from port to art capital.

📍 Destination Overview

Bilbao is the largest city in Spain's Basque Country, an art city that has transformed impressively from an industrial port. The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Gehry, shines on the riverbank with its titanium curves and has become a symbol of the city's rebirth; the floral puppy sculpture by Jeff Koons in front of it is a delight. Modern buildings along the Nervion River contrast with the tradition of the Old Town's Seven Streets, and the Santiago Cathedral is antique and solemn. It is also a paradise of Basque cuisine - pintxos snacks are dazzling in variety - and is only an hour's drive from San Sebastian, the culinary capital.
