The Notre-Dame Basilica stands opposite Place d'Armes in Old Montreal, begun in 1824 and inaugurated in 1829, when it seated 8,000 — the largest church in North America, a record it held for more than fifty years. The real draw is the interior: Victor Bourgeau's polychrome decoration of 1872–1879 pairs a cobalt-blue vault scattered with golden stars with carved walnut and gilding, and the stained glass depicts Montreal's own religious history rather than biblical scenes. The Casavant Frères great organ, Opus 26 of 1891, has four keyboards, 97 stops and almost 7,000 pipes. Designated a National Historic Site in 1989, the basilica is still a working church, with daytime sightseeing and the evening AURA show sold separately.

It opened in 1876 under a plan by Frederick Law Olmsted, co-designer of New York's Central Park, though Montréal's financial trouble that decade meant his vegetation scheme was never carried out; what survives is a road layout that follows the natural terrain. At the summit, the Kondiaronk Belvedere (1906) gives a 360-degree view over downtown, the St. Lawrence and the ridges of Vermont, beside the Mount Royal Chalet of 1932. The park is open around the clock and free.

It was founded in 1904 by Saint Brother André Bessette and gradually expanded into its present form. Its copper dome is the third-largest church dome in the world, making it an iconic feature of the Montreal skyline and a National Historic Site of Canada. The oratory includes the upper basilica, the lower church, the original chapel and the votive chapel, houses thousands of thanksgiving lights, and features a museum, gardens and organ concerts.

Swimming is limited to hours when staff and lifeguards are present (until about 18:45).
