Perched on the slopes of Mount Royal overlooking Montreal, Saint Joseph's Oratory is Canada's tallest church and one of the world's great pilgrimage shrines. The story begins with Brother Andre, a humble Holy Cross porter who built a tiny wooden chapel here in 1904 and prayed with the sick beside a lamp burning before Saint Joseph's statue. Today the massive Renaissance-style basilica, its copper dome visible across the city, draws millions of visitors each year. Pilgrims climb the 283 exterior steps, many on their knees, and the votive chapel glows with thousands of candles beside the walls of abandoned crutches.
