📍 Destination Overview
Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku, northeastern Japan, and the castle town of Date Masamune. Tree-lined avenues run through the city center, true to its name 'City of Trees'; on the site of Sendai Castle, the bronze equestrian statue of the one-eyed warrior Masamune looks out over the city, and the Momoyama-style Zuihoden mausoleum glows resplendent. Nearby, more than two hundred pine-clad islets dot Matsushima Bay, one of Japan's Three Famous Views; in the depths of winter, Zao's snow monsters (juhyo) freeze into fantastical shapes. Add tender grilled beef tongue and edamame-mochi sweets, and Sendai blends Tohoku's history, splendid scenery and cuisine into the gateway to the region.
