📍 Destination Overview
Polonnaruwa, in north-central Sri Lanka, was the Sinhalese capital in the 11th-13th centuries, succeeding Anuradhapura, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most famous monument is Gal Vihara, where seated, standing and reclining Buddhas are carved from one granite face, the zenith of Sinhalese rock carving, amid palace ruins and an ancient reservoir.
